Also known as Buffalos, these mammoth beasts once roamed the North American continent in great herds. Bison may reach heights of 5-6 feet and weights of 800-2000 lbs. Both male and female have horns. They are grazing animals feeding mainly on grasses. Bison were a mainstay in the diet of the American Plains Indians but were virtually wiped out in vast slaughters in the 19th century.
