Killed May 16, 1863 Near the close of the Battle of Champion's Hill, Mississippi General Tilghman, a native of Maryland and a resident of Kentucky, died at Champion Hill in the left front room of the Hiawatha House, a four room wood-frame structure. Confederate forces suffered more than 6,200 casualties in this battle which is considered by many historians as the decisive engagement in the Vicksburg Campaign. It is thought that General Grant spent the night after the battle in this same room of the Hiawatha House. (from article by Jack Bertram / Clarion-Ledger Sunday August 19,2001) |
