Oystermen

The second largest oyster reefs in the world lie in the waters off the Mississippi mainland. These oystermen are working the Pass Christian Reef which extends for two and a half miles. Close by are Marianne Reef and Cat Island. The reefs and the two nearby channels in the Mississippi Sound are named after Nicholas Christian Ladner of Mobile and his bride, Marianne Paquet of New Orleans. They wed in 1758, established their home on Cat Island and reared eleven children.
